002 – How To Recognize Your Purpose

passion, live with purpose

This is the You Can Live With Purpose Podcast.

I’m your host Larry Shankle. I am a lead pastor in the local church and I’ve been in ministry for nearly 20 years. More than anything, I believe that God has a great purpose for your life. Spreading the message of purpose is what God has called me to do.

In fact, this message of purpose goes much deeper than simple belief. I’ve truly experienced it through living out my calling to serve Christ in the church, and as an adoptive father with two amazing boys. My wife Amanda and I have been married for nearly 18 years; and I really do feel so blessed to have the family that God has given me.

Through the episodes of this podcast we will have an ongoing conversation about topics such as:

  • Your purpose
  • Your vision
  • Your mission
  • Your dream
  • Your faith
  • Your family

The thing is, God is interested in blessing you in every area of your life. Your God ordained purpose will propel you forward in life if you harness it and live it.

Do you want to live a life that produces real results? Something satisfying and fulfilling…I believe a life like that is the goal of most people. Fortunately for us, scripture gives the recipe for such a life. That’s what we are going to find out today through our scripture for life.

John 15:1-5 NLTse

1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.

2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.

4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

  • Jesus is the vine that we need to be plugged into.
  • The Father is the one that cares for the “garden” that is your life.
  • God the Father expects us to produce something good with the life that we’ve been given.
  • He desires spiritual fruit from us.
  • If we aren’t producing…or even if we are, eventually we will get pruned.
  • The message of Jesus is the pruning device. It cuts away the things that hinder our spiritual growth and progress.
  • What’s the secret to produce much fruit? Remain, stay connected to Jesus. To disconnect from Him is like a branch pulling itself from the vine. The nutrients instantly begin to dry up. The resources that propelled you forward into growth are gone. So then you cannot be fruitful when you are apart from Jesus.
  • If you stay connected to Christ the result is a life of much fruit.
  • Apart from Jesus Christ, scripture says you can simply do nothing…nothing fruitful…nothing with lasting fruit.

Did you know that you are a leader? Truth is, we all are. Why? Because leadership is influence; everyone influences someone. Whether it’s only in the context of your immediate family, or if you have a platform of influence that’s deep and wide, you truly do lead people. Since that’s the case, doesn’t it make sense to become the best leader you can be? I think so. Today’s tool tip of the week is a book designed to help you do just that.

Titled – Axiom – Powerful Leadership Proverbs

Authored by – Bill Hybels

I’ve read this book personally and continue to use it as a resource in my leadership. Leaders constantly run into sticky situations, places where wisdom is necessary, and circumstances that require a quick decision. Having a resource that speaks into some of those leadership points is a must. Why not learn from someone who has been there? I’ve found that experience doesn’t have to be your best teacher. The reason for this is simple…Someone else’s experience can be a better teacher!

How do you recognize your purpose? If God has planned out a life for you that fulfills your needs and makes your dreams become reality, then surely you want to recognize the purpose that makes that life possible. Well I have a few points for you to think about concerning this. It really isn’t that hard to figure out how to see and understand what might be a purpose in your life. Also, to be clear…I believe that usually we have what I call a THEME in our life. This could be understood as the overall purpose of your life. Underneath this theme our purpose is usually evolving. There may be several purposes in your life at any given moment that are somehow connected to the overall theme of your life. But no matter which type of purpose you’re talking about, recognizing it is essentially the same.

  1. Makes you passionate
    • Stay awake
    • Always thinking
  2. You enjoy it
  3. You are good at it
  4. It has a gravitational pull
    • From deep within you know it
    • It us inescapable
    • Your life starts to form around it
    • You sense God has given you this purpose
  5. There is a distinct call on your life
  6. A mission begins to form in your mind
  7. You desperately desire to Serve others through your purpose
    • Purpose is never just about you
    • It works itself out through service

Could I ask you a favor?

001 – Your Purpose Starts With God

Do you ever wonder, “why do I exist?”…”What is my purpose?”

It’s the question that people have been trying to answer for generations. Sometimes we find some meaning to life…other times the road is packed with difficulty, fogginess, and a sense of misguided direction.

Well, let me ask you this…Do you want all that to change? For good?

The good news is…it can! You have a destiny and purpose that starts with God and will help you, guide you, and direct you in every venture of life. You’re not supposed to go at this thing alone. Every step of the way Jesus Christ will be there to support you. Thankfully, I found out this truth sooner rather than later…and you can too.

The scripture of the week – Jeremiah 29:11-13

This scripture goes hand in hand with the purpose of this podcast and my blog. I really believe that God has given you a purpose…that purpose was meant to control the direction of your life. The destiny that God has planned for you is a big deal. Missing it would be the worst thing that could happen to you. Why? Because your purpose and destiny shape everything about your life. God’s overarching plan for you was created so that you could live with purpose, vision, mission, and direction. Whether the subject is your family or your job…your money or your dreams, God’s purpose is intrinsically linked to every part of your life.

I love this organization! They do amazing things for children caught in poverty. All across the world, children suffer the effects of poverty. Hunger,  the lack of basic necessities, the want for more. This is not their only need, though. There is a spiritual need to consider as well. Compassion International serves to meet all of these needs and you can make a difference in their effort. It’s easy to sponsor a child. My family does this. It’s a great way to make a positive impact in an area that you may otherwise, never visit. You can sponsor a child right through the link on my blog. To do that just go to www.youcanlivewithpurpose.com and click the link in the sidebar.

Tool tip of the week – Tools to help you organize and live your purpose better.

The tool tip this week is actually a list of people. It’s people, podcasts, and blogs that will really help you accomplish your purpose better than you ever thought possible. I’ve been listening to some of these folks for years now. They have inspired me, helped me, and pushed me…yet the funny thing is…they don’t even know me. Well, the world we live in is an amazing place. Now days you can be mentored by some of the greatest and most knowledgable people around…and they don’t even know you. Blogs and podcasts have made it possible to receive training that you couldn’t possibly have received so readily ten years ago.

I remember being a young youth pastor checking the brand new internet for help (remember dial up?)…It was tough, really tough to find great help, training or advice. Especially when it came to things that we are going to cover like: your purpose, your vision, your mission or leadership. You just didn’t have the resources available. Now, enter 2015. There has never been an easier time in history not only to learn; but also to connect with influential people that literally propel you forward.

With all that being said…Here’s my list of folks that have literally become “purpose trainers” in my life:

  1. Micheal Hyatt – www.michealhyatt.com
  2. Ray Edwards – www.rayedwards.com
  3. Cliff Ravenscraft – www.podcastanswerman.com
  4. Carey Nieuwhof – www.careynieuwhof.com
  5. Andy Stanley – www.andystanley.com
  6. Perry Noble – www.perrynoble.com

Now obviously there are many more people that influence my life; but these are some that influence me the most. They have great ideas, do great things, and help many people. The organizations they lead are making a difference and huge impact on the world. Chances are really strong that you’ll hear me quote these guys…probably a lot. If you’re needing direction on your business, podcast, or spiritual issues they are definitely a great resource to remember.

Feature presentation:

  • It may be hard for you to believe in yourself
  • Have you ever faced that situation that forced you to believe in yourself?
  • How did you react?
  • I think your purpose goes much deeper than what you are able to accomplish on your own.
  • The fact is, God has a destiny…there is a purpose for your life…Some of you may scoff at this; but I believe there really is a grand design.

To make the most of your life, let God have everything about your life.

  • It opens up the possibilities of purpose.
  • You’ve probably daydreamed before. If you’re like me, then you like to think…I’ve been this way all my life. My mind just never shuts down.
  • I’ve always had these dreams and desires that seemed to come from somewhere deep inside me. Some of you know exactly what I’m talking about.
  • You have to understand that those dream originated in your life by God’s design.
  • Purpose, passion, having a dream, reaching a goal, overcoming obstacles to do something great…themes like that have always interested me.
  • When I gave my life completely to Jesus Christ…I started to find out why I am…the way I am…
  • It’s like the creator has the instructions to COMPLETE what He started in you…Giving your life to Christ is the first REAL STEP in living with purpose.

Why does God give you a purpose?
  • Because He loves you and wants to add value to your life. God cares about you deeply. You are His ultimate creation. You are an integral part of His kingdom.
  • Because God doesn’t create meaningless things or people. God Himself is unsearchable in His greatness. Being a person created in the image of God makes it impossible to not live with purpose.
  • To fulfill His kingdom purposes. Your purpose is tied to something far greater and more vast than to have a good life. You were created to live with purpose in order to fulfill your place in the kingdom of God.

Can I live my purpose without God?

Some do for a time
There are people who will be born with talent or ability that takes them to the top of whatever endeavor they are trying to accomplish. Can you find happiness in accomplishments? Sure you can. You can find happiness in collecting massive amounts of “stuff” too. Accruing compounding interest in all your bank accounts brings a certain satisfaction to your life. You can begin to feel as though you are living the life you were made to live while everything is going well.
But purpose…deep, satisfying, purpose doesn’t come from money, talent, accomplishment or any of the other things that some lead you believe it comes from.
Raw talent and ability only take you so far.
Being successful doesn’t satisfy fully.
To live with purpose is about more than these things. It is about living the life that God created you to live, and finding your meaning in that life.
And the funny thing is…More often than not, when you live with purpose in the life God created you to live, you find success, happiness, true joy, even the accumulation of possessions and wealth at times. It’s not guaranteed. I’m not saying that when you live with purpose the way God designed you to live that it’s some get rick quick scheme. Far from it. Possessions and gain are not even the point. But you also can’t deny the stories of people in scripture that God blessed tremendously because they followed Him and chose to live with purpose.
It seems then that all the things people usually look for in life, all the things that they really desire to have, can be traced back to purpose.
Purpose is not about external happiness or accumulation. It’s about a deep internal longing to matter. When you find something that fills that need, all the others stuff becomes way less important.

Can you truly know your purpose without knowing God?

  • I don’t believe you can.
  • God reveals purpose as He reveals himself. The amazing thing about purpose is that it evolves over time to some degree. Your purpose doesn’t really change. It’s more like God reveals new aspects and focuses of it. When God reveals His heart for you, to you…It changes you. Throughout some seasons of life you have one direction, and when God begins to lead you differently your direction will change. Your ultimate purpose may stay the same; but pieces of it start to evolve. Over time you begin to have a greater understanding of where your purpose ties in to where you are in life at the moment.
  • To really understand your purpose you have to get acquainted with God. To live with purpose you have to follow Him.

How can I know God?

  • Through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • How does it begin?
  • By believing God loves you
  • By believing he sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sins on the cross
  • By believing in Jesus for yourself and confessing your belief to others

What are my next steps

  • Engage with Jesus daily(how)
  • Grow in your faith
  • Prepare to receive from God-he wants to give good things in your life
  • Get involved with a church that preaches the whole bible and begin to serve others

In Closing…

Now…we are going to cover a lot of stuff on this show…

  • Some of it you’ll probably agree with…other things…not so much.
  • Maybe you don’t see eye to eye on the God thing…THAT’S OK.
  • I also hope to give you some practical things you can apply EACH WEEK…to begin living with purpose.

Now let me ask you this question:

Get out there and do something today to begin to live with purpose

He can lead you, and help you reach your life’s ultimate purpose.

May I ask a favor of you?

How To Matter More To Those You Love Most

How to matter

Do I matter? That’s a big question. The simple way to matter more to the ones you love most is to add value to their life by living in your God given strengths, gifts, and ability.

Do I matter?

You may have had a difficult time believing that you could accomplish anything good growing up. That used to be me. I believed that for the longest time. “Do I matter?” is a question that you need an answer for. It’s easy to believe the lie that you don’t matter. The truth is, you matter way more than you think. But here’s the deal, you are either going to believe you don’t have any good qualities, or you have to believe that God has gifted you with good qualities. There really is no in between.

When it comes to understanding who you are and your unique set of wiring, you need to realize that you are gifted to do something well. Many people shy away from thinking things like that, me included. To be honest, it’s really hard to write about.

It’s not prideful to feel like you are gifted to do something well. Being humble also doesn’t involve denying that you are good at anything. The simple truth is that you were born with a God given purpose. From the moment you came into this world, God had a unique plan for your life. There are those that reject this idea. The reason they reject it, I believe, is that they just haven’t found God’s plan for them yet.

You are gifted

You were given spiritual gifts to impact the world you live in. You were given a service gift to help the people around you. Finally, you have personality gifts that make you who you are. The thing is, the world is an interconnected place. Your life touches more people than you’ll ever realize. God designed it this way. If you are a Christian, then you probably already know that God considers you part of the body of Christ with a special role to play.

Your gifts, abilities, talents, the things you are good at, your personality, and even spiritual gifts are all meant to help you live in your purpose. Ultimately living in your purpose causes you to live your dream, because your dream and your purpose are connected.

So, what are you gifted to do? What is it that you are good at that makes a contribution to the people around you? Often we think highly of up front talent and ability. But I believe some of the most talented and powerful people are those that use their gifts and abilities in places that aren’t as open to the public view.

The book of Romans, in the Bible speaks about the gift of serving others. Have you ever been served by someone? Has anyone ever taken time out of their schedule to serve you in some way, not looking for recognition? Maybe you have this gift. Are you great at making other people feel better about themselves? Don’t discount a gift like that because it is vital. This same passage tells us about the gifts of being an encourager, and a generous person. Then it jumps to speaking about the gift of leadership, something very up front and public.

The bottom line is this…God has given you gifts to do certain things well. Those gifts are meant to help you live your purpose and fulfill your dream. Your personality is what makes you, you. It doesn’t need to change or be altered because it’s who you really are.

One important key to understanding your unique wiring is to find out what your gifts, talents, and strengths are. You are good at something; and the reason you’re good at it is that God created you to be good at it. To live in your dream, to reach it, to fulfill it is going to require some searching of who you really are. You are going to need to figure out what you are uniquely gifted to do. One of the easiest ways to begin this process is by taking a strengths test. The Gallup organization offers several different tests that can help you understand what your individual strengths are.

Sir William Osler who was one of the founding physicians of Johns Hopkins Hospital said.

“We are here to add what we can to, not get what we can from life”.

Your strengths, gifts, and abilities help you give something back to the world. It would seem that living your dream is all about you; but what you get from your dream is only part of the story. Your dream, when you live it, will touch the lives of those closest to you. In some cases, living in your dream will impact people around the world. “Do I matter?”…Yes you matter!

How to matter

One of the greatest fears you have to overcome in life is the fear of being good at nothing. Why? Because we want to count for something. People desire to be needed and to feel like their life is making a difference. The great lie is to believe that you don’t matter. In believing that lie you are discounting all the planning God has done for your life. To believe that you don’t matter is to look the grace of God in the face and turn away from it. The simple fact is, you do matter. If you want to better understand what your strengths, gifts, and abilities are, look at your life from the perspective of what you are able to do for others. In doing something for others, your life becomes more valuable because you are adding value to other people.

Thanks for reading my blog today! I really am so grateful for you…it’s my mission to help you find and live your dream. You can add value to someone else by sharing this post with them…why not do it now?

Have a great day!

How To Supercharge Your Dream With Passion

The difference between having a dream and reaching your dream is passion.

Passion may not solve all the problems there are in relation to making your dream come true. I know that passion alone may not make everything work. But passion is definitely the hot wire of your dream. Without it you can kiss your dream goodbye.

No one without passion will ever successfully get ahold of their dream. So here’s the question…What are you passionate about? There’s something that drives you. That’s what passion does for us. It drives us. Passion pushes you forward. It compels you. It propels you.

What is it that does that for you? When you figure it out, you’ve found your passion. Once you find your passion you are at a good starting place to begin chasing your dream.

Passion does several things for us:

  1. It keeps us awake at night.
  2. It keeps us motivated when we might otherwise give up.
  3. It keeps our thoughts filled with ideas and possibility.
  4. It keeps us excited about tomorrow.

You are going to need all of those things and more if you are going to see your dream come true. I know that is what you want. So passion has got to be discovered and stoked. It’s like a fire. You have to stir up your passion every once in awhile or it begins to die out.

Building my home taught me a lot about passion.

I remember several years ago when my wife and I were just about to start building our house. It was a crazy time. We had never built a house before; but we really wanted to have something to call our own. I remember sitting down on the couch with my dad and going over house plans. The excitement was a feeling I’ll never forget.

A few months after those initial meetings, my wife and I went to the bank and got started on our loan. To this day I can recall how I felt when they called me to say, “you’re approved!”. It was a great day. Not long after that the real need for passion came. See, we had been renting a house for over five years. To be able to start building and make the payments we needed to make, meant we had to move out of our rent house. So we did. My in laws were kind enough to let us stay with them for what was supposed to be about three months.

Three months eventually turned into nine months! Much longer than we had originally anticipated. During that nine months, the thing that kept us going was the dream of having our home. Passion made me want to pursue my dream.

I didn’t know how to contract the building of a home; but I learned because of passion. I really didn’t know the first thing about actually doing any of the work myself; But I did it. My dad purchased a hammer for me on my birthday; and I used that hammer daily for nine months. Passion kept me awake at night thinking of ways to accomplish tasks that I had never undertaken before. Passion motivated me to get up on days that I might otherwise had given up. Passion filled my mind with possibilities. Passion kept me excited about tomorrow.

What keeps you awake at night? Is there something that makes it hard for you to go to sleep? If there is, it just might be your passion. When I first began pastoring my church I couldn’t sleep. My mind was alive with ideas. How could I reach more people? What was the best way to speak? Did God want us to do this or that? I would lie awake for hours just thinking. When it became too much for me, I would get up and go into the living room and write. There were entire notebooks that eventually became filled with ideas that passion drove me to dream about.

You were wired by God with something to be passionate about. Your passion is connected to your purpose. Remember, God created you with a purpose. He has wired you to fulfill that purpose. The fact is, no one can live out the purpose you were created for except you. The amazing thing about it is that your purpose is the bucket that holds your dream. Your dream is an extension of your purpose. Maybe you’ve never taken the time to investigate it fully. Maybe for you, your passion is food, or sports, or playing an instrument. Your passion might be collecting something or learning a new skill. The thing is, passion is a major contributor to your dream. So lean in to your passions.

For the longest time, I had a dream of being a writer. But discouragement kept me back from it. Once I gave in to my passions and started to explore them, through this blog…I haven’t been able to stop. You’ll be the same way. Your passion will drive you.

The difference between having a dream and reaching your dream is passion.

If you want to flip the switch and activate your dream, you are going to have to find your passion. It’s there. If you know the purpose you were created for you are already a good way down the road to reaching your dream. But here’s the thing…Only you can really answer the question “what am I passionate about”.

Why not take the time to explore the things that could be the passion of your life? Those things might just propel you into living the life you have dreamed of living.

Answer these questions for yourself:

  1. What keeps you awake at night?
  2. Is there something that keeps you motivated when it would be easier to give up?
  3. Do you seem to be an idea person, always thinking of new ideas? Write down two of them.
  4. Are you excited when you think about the possibilities of your future? Write down what you think your future would look like if you had the chance to live out what you are passionate about.

There’s a dream inside you just waiting to be supercharged by your passion. Why not start living it today? I really hope you will!

Have a great day and remember to share this post with someone who needs it…they will appreciate the encouragement.

What Do You Want To Be Remembered For?

Dreams, Purpose, Potential

Someday your going to die. No one wants to think about it; but it’s true. We don’t live forever. If you have a dream this is one of the most important things for you to remember.

Chances are you’re worried about living out your dream. How is it going to feel one day when God answers your prayer? How’s it going to feel when your dream comes true? It’s going to be amazing. To live in your dream is one of the most satisfying things that can happen to you.

But to reach your dream requires you to understand your wiring. You’re wired to reach the potential that God has for your life. You’re wired to reach your dream. This question… “What do I want to be remembered for?” is the best place to start when it comes to accurately understanding what you’re wired to do.

If you have a dream, then you need a plan to reach it. Knowing, understanding, and following your unique wiring is where to start when it comes to living in your dream.

This Question Is A Compass for your dream

Many people will never think about this question; but that doesn’t change it’s impact on your life. Deep down we all have something that we hope our life leaves behind. We want our family to think back about us with honor. Wouldn’t it be one of the best things to know that your life changed the course and direction for the lives of the ones you love most? We want our family, friends, colleagues and coworkers to feel that we made a difference in their life. Everyone, including you, wants to know that your life matters.

Here’s the thing…Whether you aim to or not you are going to leave behind a legacy. You absolutely will be remembered for something! You will leave an inheritance to your family that’s much more valuable than money. You have this one life to build that inheritance. So this question of what you’re going to leave behind should be a question that directs your life.

It’s a compass. When you can’t seem to find your way, look to this question. If you don’t know what your true purpose in life is, let this question guide you. You may not understand what you’re dream is at the moment; but I bet you know deep down how you want to be remembered when you’re gone.

Your One Thing

Your dream is your one thing. It’s the title slide to a life filled with amazing content. The dream that compels you to go forward is worth understanding, it’s worth finding out. God has a plan and a purpose for you and knowing how you’re wired helps you achieve the one thing you were created for.

God wired you that way

I remember getting really discouraged a few years ago. It seemed like everything was going against my dream. Have you ever felt like your dream was slipping through your hands and you were powerless to stop it? Maybe for you it was a prayer that needed answering. Either way, sometimes you can allow yourself to get discouraged. There were some ideas that I had been thinking about implementing; but I just didn’t know if they would work. One morning as I prayed about all this, I felt the Lord speak  in my heart.

Here’s what I felt Him saying:

“These things are from Me. I place in your mind the ideas I desire. Don’t doubt my ideas. Lean in to the things I’ve wired you to do. Lean in to the call that I have placed on you and you’ll find the dream of your heart. My dream is being fulfilled in you. Follow the things that I place in your heart; and hold on to them. I have placed them there. Be encouraged, not discouraged.”

Then He said this:

“Is there any reason for you not to trust me?”

I couldn’t believe what I had heard inside. It strengthened and encouraged me so much. And since I was in a habit of typing out my prayers at that time, I typed down what I felt was God’s response to me. I still have it saved in my files and refer back to it when I feel unsure, or down.

You know what? You can trust God!

Here’s the point of that story…God didn’t just wire me to reach my dreams. He wired you too. Why is this so important? Because legacy, what people will remember about you when you are gone is like the hot wire in your life. Legacy literally powers your dream. Really your dream is simply the outworking, or the fleshing out of your internal wiring. When you know what you want to be remembered for after you are gone, it gives you motivation, direction, and a since of understanding about what you were put here to do. All of that helps you know if you have the right dream.

God wired you a certain way for a reason. That reason is simple. There are some things that you probably won’t be able to accomplish. Some people are born with the ability to sing. Others learn that ability. Usually the ones who are born with it are easy to distinguish from the ones that aren’t. In the end, you want to chase the right dream. You want to go after the right thing. To do that you need to be chasing the dream that God wired you catch.

I think you probably already know what you want to be remembered for. God plants destiny in our heart from the moment we are born. Looking back at my life I can see that even from a young age I had a desire to help people. Maybe I didn’t know how to put that desire into words. For sure I didn’t know that God would call me to be a pastor. But on some level I knew there was a purpose for my life.

Here’s why it’s important to understand your unique wiring…Because your wiring connects the switch to your dream. If you get cross-wired, or get things all mixed up, you’ll never reach the dream that you really want to reach. Knowing what you want to be remembered for is a big part of learning about your internal wiring.

I believe that you can be remembered as the person that lived his or her dream. You can make the impact God designed you to make. You can be happy, and satisfied with where your life ends up.

Here’s one thing you need to take the time to do:

Write down what you most want to be remembered for.

Actually write it down on paper. Do you want to be remembered as being loving or kind? Is it your dream to be remembered as a great leader or parent? Or do you simply want people to say that you really made a difference in their life? The key to hitting that goal and reaching that dream is to write it down.
